Gateway Casinos has announced Wasaga Beach has been chosen as the location for a new casino for South Georgian Bay.
The announcement was made public on Thursday October 11th.
The size and location of the new casino has not been determined.
Robert Mitchell, Director, Communications & Public Affairs for Gateway Casinos in Eastern Canada told CollingwoodLiving.com that more details will be made available once a site has been determined.
We look forward to working with OLG and the Town of Wasaga Beach to achieve all the necessary approvals to start construction as quickly as possible
“I can confirm that Gateway has selected the Town of Wasaga Beach as the new site for the continued expansion of Gateway Casinos & Entertainment into Ontario. Wasaga Beach is already a well-established tourism destination in the province and the perfect fit for the kind of casino gaming, dining and entertainment that distinguishes the Gateway brand here and in western Canada. We look forward to working with OLG and the Town of Wasaga Beach to achieve all the necessary approvals to start construction as quickly as possible. Once a site is determined, Gateway will announce details on the size and scope of the development including new employment opportunities, food and beverage offerings and the investment in the local economy for the new build.”
Mayor Brian Smith told CTV News Barrie that the economic impact for Wasaga Beach is huge, saying that up to 450 well paying jobs are anticipated. He stated that Wasaga Beach will receive $1.5 million to $2.5 million in revenue will be received annually by the Town.
Deputy Mayor Nina Bifolchi while happy with the announcement said she only learned of the news at the same time as the announcement was made public.
“Past Mayor Cal Patterson, along with staff members George Vadeboncoeur and Jenny Legget deserve the credit for the Casino coming to Wasaga Beach. It was them who created great relationships with the OLG representatives. It was the last term of council who approved a casino being located in the Town of Wasaga Beach when other communities did not recognize the potential benefits.
The casino will create jobs, provide entertainment as well as a yearly dividend that the town can use towards projects in the community.
It unfortunate that such great news had to be shadowed by Mayor Smith, some council members and senior staff keeping this news from myself and Councillor Bray as we found out at the same time as the public. It is this lack of inclusive leadership that has created a divide in our community and a mistrust for those leading at town hall.
Good news is that it will be the next council who confirms the location and the details of the agreements on behalf of the town.”
Bifolchi is a mayoral candidate along with incumbent Brian Smith.
There are multiple sites under consideration for a new Casino in Wasaga Beach.
