| A four-way partnership has provided the Town of Collingwood with 18 new affordable housing rental units. The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, the County of Simcoe and the Town of Collingwood recently celebrated the opening of the new affordable housing development at 145 High Street in Collingwood. The project is supported by more than $1.2 million in funding through the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program. Simcoe-Grey MP Helena Guergis said the renovation project is a good way to get the local economy moving because it puts construction workers and trades people to work quickly. The 30 unit housing facility that provides 18 affordable housing units for low to moderate income single people and families and individuals with special needs received $620,000 in municipal grants in addition to the federal and provincial funding. "Collingwood is home to many families with a wide range of needs and one of the particular needs is for quality, affordable, housing stock" said Collingwood Mayor Chris Carrier. The mayor stated that this project represents a great example of cooperation between the Province of Ontario, the County of Simcoe and the Town of Collingwood. He added that the private developer and President of Mirten Collingwood Limited, Mr. John Fogolin, made the project an easy sell to the community because of the beautiful design of the building and the affordable rent. "I must say that because of the extremely hard work by all the various stake holders, this unique project happened" said Mr. Fogolin. He went on to add that he is very encouraged by how successful the project is and that he hopes it helps to address the need for affordable housing in Collingwood. Official guests at the opening included Mayor Chris Carrier, Simcoe-Grey MP Helena Guergis, Barrie MPP Aileen Carroll, Simcoe County Warden Cal Patterson and President of Mirten Collingwood Ltd. John Fogolin. The Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement comprises a commitment of $301 million from each of the two senior levels of government. In total, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will invest at least $734 million in the program, which will provide affordable housing for up to 20,000 households in Ontario. |
