One of the province's most popular soccer tournaments was held in Collingwood on Saturday, June 11th and Sunday, June 12th. Collingwood United Invitational 2011 Tournament saw 2,300 athletes from around the province take to the playing fields in Collingwood, Thornbury and Stayner. Tournament co-chairs Tracy Atkinson and Annette Schneider said that when you add parents and spectators, close to 9,000 people visited the Collingwood region over the weekend because of soccer. These large numbers, and the fact that this tournament was 90% full in February, speaks to the incredible growth in the popularity of the sport in the province. Annette Schneider said that visitors had booked hotel rooms throughout the region well in advance of the tournament. "No field space was left to handle any additional entry requests that came in." Schneider said that all Collingwood soccer fields, three Thornbury fields and the Stayner high school field were all in use over the weekend. The Collingwood United Invitational Tournament is extremely popular. "People just love to come to Collingwood, and we run an excellent tournament." This year, 144 teams registered for the tournament.
