The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada's largest, single day, volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research, and education and awareness programs. Every October, thousands of Canadians participate in the run. Their reasons for taking part may vary, but everyone has the same goal in mind; to create a future without breast cancer.
In Collingwood, participants gathered at Harbourview Park on Sunday morning, October 4th to take part in the town's 5th anniversary Run for the Cure event. In 2008, the Collingwood run raised over $150,000, representing a 30 percent increase over the 2007 figures. In fact, the increase from the previous year represented the 2nd highest increase in all of the run sites across Ontario. Collingwood Mayor Chris Carrier participated in the event, and told the crowd that he had learned that the 2009 turnout was the largest in the 5 year history of the Collingwood event. Carrier also took time to remember Sandra Stoutenburg, a former Collingwood resident and high school teacher. Stoutenburg will always be remembers as a tireless worker for the town trails committee.
Drew Wright sang the national anthem, followed by opening remarks from event organizers and guests, some stretching exercises, and then the launch of the Collingwood portion of the CIBC Run for the Cure.
