Collingwood Utility Services and the Town of Collingwood held its first Municipal Works Day at the Collingwood Curling Club on Tuesday, September 20th.

From 9:00 a.m. until noon, first grade classes from all Collingwood elementary schools arrived to participate in a hands-on, highly interactive learning experience. For example, students could sit in a police car with the lights flashing, or on a Police ATV, while talking to a member of the Collingwood OPP. They could climb into town trucks, honk horns, sit in a fire truck and ambulance. Students were treated to equipment demonstrations by town staff members who took time to answer questions following the presentations.

From 12:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., high school students interested in future careers in the municipal industry were invited to drop by. In addition, members of the public were welcome to visit the various displays and talk to town staff.

"This is a terrific event for the community" said Mayor Sandra Cooper. "It is so much easier to bring the school children into one location where they can see so many displays all at once rather than have them visit every town department, fire hall, police station and public utilities individually throughout the year."

Municipal Works Day participants included:
Collus Hydro
Collingwood Public Utilities
Public Works
Parks, Recreation and Culture
Economic Development
Human Resources
Bylaw/Animal Control
