Collingwood Industrial Base Takes Another Hit

The changing face of the North American Manufacturing Sector has dealth another blow to the Town of Collingwood. Mayor Chris Carrier announced to Council on Monday June 25th that the Goodyear Hose Plant would close within the year.

Mayor Chris Carrier announced to Collingwood Council that he and Town CAO Gord Norris had met earlier in the day (Monday June 25th) with Mr. Louis Lapierre, General Manager, Canadian Manufacturing Campus Manager for Goodyear Canada, at which time they learned of the company’s intention to close the Collingwood operation this year. “They did tell their staff today that they will be closing later this year” said Mayor Carrier in his remarks to Council. The plant closure announcement impacts 165 people who are directly employed at the facility made up of 27 salaried and 138 hourly associates.

“I certainly thank Mr. Lapierre for coming down to Town Hall and meeting with us face-to-face” Carrier told Council. Mayor Carrier said no further details were available, adding that Goodyear Officials will be working with their colleagues in the United States and in Canada. “I’m going to assume that further announcements will be coming from them and they will be sharing information hopefully with us in the near future. As we know many of the families who work there, I would ask that we keep them in mind over the next several weeks” Carrier added.

The announced plant closure follows the closure of Kaufman Furniture, Blue Mountain Pottery, Backyard Products and Nacan over the past two years. In addition, the Collingwood Alcoa Plant is winding down operations prior to closing the plant this summer. The changing landscape of the manufacturing sector throughout North America continues to hit home here in Collingwood and in communities throughout Ontario.

Collingwood's Economic Development Department continues to move forward to address the changing times. Earlier this year plans were announced for a new Industrial Park to be developed in the south-east portion of Collingwood. In addition, the former Nacan facility has been redeveloped to house the new Collingwood Ethanol Plant.

In total, 165 jobs will be lost when the Collingwood Goodyear Plant closes later this year.
