Work Will See First Street Widened
To Accommodate A Continuous Left Turn Lane

The big dig is underway along First Street in Collingwood. Work will include the widening of First Street to allow for the introduction of new left turn lanes. In addition, curb and gutter replacement will take place on both the north and south sides of the street. New traffic lights will be introduced at the intersections of Spruce Street and Heritage Drive, and traffic signals will be replaced at the intersections of High Street, Cedar Street and Pine Street.

Odour Issues Are Temporary

Appearing on Georgian Bay Today on 97.7 The Beach, Collingwood Mayor Chris Carrier said that the town has received complaints of bad odours along First Street. "As you know there is a major sewer line that goes along First Street, because our waste water treatment plant is on Georgian Bay, and those lines all go into that particular point" Carrier said. He added that the flushing and cleaning has to be scheduled ahead of time prior to the digging. Carrier said as a result, there will be noise and odour issues from time to time. He is asking for the public's continued patience with the matter.

Most of the First Street construction work will be completed in 2009, including road widening, sanitary sewer replacement, illumination, traffic signals, sidewalk, curb and base asphalt. In 2010, work will continue to create a concrete median, cross-walks, landscaping and top course asphalt.
