Torn Down

Demolition crews took down the former John's Car Wash building on Hume Street during the week of September 10th.

John's Car Wash Was A Local Gathering Place For Over 35 Years

Collingwood has lost a popular gathering place. Demolition crews moved in on Monday September 10th to begin to take down the former John's Car Wash on Hume Street. The business was operated by popular Collingwood resident John Markovich. Mr. Markovich said that he finds it quite a change to get up in the morning and not go to work at a place where he served customers for over three decades. John Markovich has given a great deal to the community in business, local politics and sports. Markovich always greeted his customers with a smile, every day, for close to 35 years. Prior to the arrival of Mr. Markovich, the gas station was operated by Bill Rennie. Prior to Mr. Rennie, former Collingwood Councilor and Deputy Reeve Nip Spooner operated the business.

The face of Hume Street continues to drastically change. The demolition of the popular Collingwood gas bar and car wash took place at a time when construction is set to begin on new retail and condiminium units nearby at the site of the former Admiral Collingwood School. Work continues to upgrade infrastructure along St. Marie Street and in the Spring, work will begin to widen Hume Street.

The Hume Street location of the former John's Car Wash sits within a stone's throw from Downtown Collingwood and the new Admiral Collingwood retail and condominium development. It is not known what the plans are for the development of this commercial property.
