Canada's most decorated citizen, Collingwood's Major General Richard Rohmer, spoke of the creation of Canada. He talked about the roots of confederation as those gathered in front of the federal building in downtown Collingwood thought about freedom, human rights, and how lucky we all are to be Canadian.

Major General Rohmer welcomed Collingwood citizens and visitors who had gathered to participate in the Citizenship Reaffirmation Ceremony at noon on Wednesday, July 1st. Town Crier Ken Templeman participated in the ceremony, as did soldiers from the Canadian Armed Forces. The crowd sang "Oh Canada" and then enjoyed a piece of a special Canada Day Birthday Cake.

The Citizenship Reaffirmation Ceremony was a part of a day with activities throughout Collingwood's Downtown District. The day began early with local politicians cooking and serving pancakes and sausages at a Pancake Breakfast in front of Town Hall. The downtown merchants took to the streets to offer special bargains and to celebrate Canada Day. The day continued with live entertainment at "The Station" including a performance by Collingwood's Drew Wright with Fall and Divide.
