Remembering Hull 172 BLACK BAY |
| with a painting, a ship model, and a launch
|
| It was a great day for a ship launch in Collingwood Harbour. In another time, thousands of people would have lined the harbour to witness a launch of a massive Canadian Steamship Lines ship. On this day, a few friends and family gathered to remember Hull 172 BLACK BAY, thanks to the efforts of Jim Trott of Collingwood, Keith Kueneman of Nottawa, and Don Near of Hanover. Artist Keith Kueneman has completed work on a painting of Black Bay. Model builder Don Near has completed work on a working model of the ship that was launched in Collingwood on September 20, 1962. Retired Collingwood businessman Jim Trott brought the two together at Collingwood Harbour to complete the process of remembering Black Bay by setting the working model free in the water just a stone's throw from where the original 730 ft. ship was built. Keith Kueneman said that he talked to Don Near and the pair agreed to get working on a painting and working model together. "I said you build it, I'll try and paint it with water colour, and we'll see who's turns out the best." Jim Trott has a long association with shipbuilding. His family business, Trott's Furniture, outfitted every ship built at the Collingwood Shipyard. |
