Construction Moving Forward Along
New Highway 26 Realignment

Construction continues on a new overpass that will take travellers along Fairgrounds Road over the new Highway 26. The realignment of Highway 26 will see additional lanes of traffic and the elimination of numerous sideroad intersections that have been the scene of many accidents along the present two-lane highway. It was almost one year ago when Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson introduced a motion in the Ontario Legislature on Monday June 4th calling upon the McGuinty Liberal Government to immediately complete the re-development of Highway 26 from Stayner to Collingwood. Wilson got the project started back in 2000 when the previous Progressive Conservative government approved the project, acquired the land and confirmed the engineering required to begin construction. Shovels were in the ground and bulldozers were on the site until the new McGuinty government pulled the construction crews off the site in the summer of 2004.

The project remained silent until the Provincial Liberals confirmed plans to once again begin work on the new Highway 26 Realignment Project. The announcement was made as a part of the Provincial Government's budget speach. In the 2007-08 fiscal year, the Liberal Government promised to $1.7 billion in the provincial highway system, including resuming work on the Highway 26 realignment.

Construction of the new Highway 26 Realignment Project was haulted by the McGuinty Liberal Government in the summer of 2004.

While work is underway to construct a new overpass at Fairgrounds Road and the new Highway 26 site, plans are underway to widen and upgrade the Poplar Sideroad (below) along the southern boundary of Collingwood. The provincial government has agreed to provice 7.3 million dollars to help improve the Popular Sideroad between the 10th Line and Highway 26.

Collingwood motorists will be seeing upgrades to main roads throughout the town this summer including the widening of First Street (below) and Hume Street.

Collingwood's busy First Street is presently 4 lanes and helps move traffic through the town to the expanding western commercial district, highway 26 West and to nearby Blue Mountain.
