Looking To The Trails Ahead
Collingwood To Participate In
Walk & Bike For Life's
Trail Visioning Pilot Project

"A city is only a means to a way of life. So how do you want to live?"
--
Gil Peñalosa

The Town of Collingwood will be a part of Walk & Bike for Life’s Trail Visioning Pilot Project. On Friday, February 6th, Collingwood citizens, community leaders and municipal staff will take part in a community-led planning workshop to be facilitated by international active transportation expert and urban strategist, Gil Peñalosa. The workshop will be held from 8am to 3pm on Friday February 6th at Georgian Manor Resort. An international leader in creating great cities and communities through active public spaces, Gil Peñalosa is passionate about realizing the potential of great places to foster healthier communities with happier residents. Gil is also Executive Director of the Canadian non-profit Walk & Bike for Life as well as a successful international speaker and consultant. In his inspirational presentations and workshops on creating better Communities, he develops strong linkages of Walking, Bicycling, Parks and Trails, with improving the Personal and Public Health, enhancing our Transportation systems, providing Recreation for ALL, a cleaner Environment and advancing Economic Development.

Peñalosa is also a Senior Consultant for the renowned Danish firm Gehl Architects. He serves on the Boards of Directors of American Trails, City Parks Alliance, International Sport and Culture Association, as well as on Advisory Committees of America Walks, Green GTA and WalkON. Gil earned a Master in Business Administration from UCLA’s Management School.

Workshop participants will learn about successful trail planning and networks from around the world. Priorities will be set for action around walking, bicycling and active mobility in the community. Anyone with an interest in learning more about walking and bicycling opportunities in Collingwood is encouraged to attend the workshop.

Collingwood’s Director of Leisure Services Peter Dunbar encourages local residents to attend the workshop. “Our trails are a great asset to our community as a recreational amenity, now it is time to get people using them for more than recreation and make Collingwood one of North America’s healthiest communities to live in” Dunbar said.

The workshop is part of Trails for Active Transportation project being piloted by Ontario-based non-profit organization Walk and Bike for Life in select Ontario communities. Funding comes from the Ministry of Health Promotion. “We chose to work with Collingwood because we identified it as a place where there’s great potential to improve the connectivity and use of existing trails as both a means of transportation and recreation” said Amanda O’Rourke, Project Manager from Walk and Bike for Life. “Our goal with this project is to reposition trails as an integral part of community life – connecting people who live, work and play along their paths” O’Rourke added.
