Collingwood Residents Took Part In 2011 Terry Fox Run
At Harbourview Park
It was a cool, sunny day for Collingwood residents to gather at Harbourview Park to participate in the annual Terry Fox Run.
Terry Fox had one goal in mind when he set out on his planned run across Canada in the spring of 1980. His goal was to raise enough money to cure cancer. He covered more than 5,000 kilometres before learning that the cancer had spread to his lungs, preventing him from continuing his brave journey.
Terry Fox passed away on June 28, 1981. On September 13th, 1981, less than three months after his death, more than 300,000 Canadians took to the streets to take part in the first Terry Fox Run, raising $3.5 million for cancer research.
2011 marks the 31st anniversary of the Terry Fox Run. To date, more than $550 million has been raised for cancer research. The Terry Fox Foundation was establshed in 1988 to review and approve grant applications for cancer research. To date, the foundation has funded more than 1,100 research projects in Canada.
Each year, Canadians are joined by more than two million people in 28 countries around the world including Cuba, where the largest annual Terry Fox Run outside of Canada is held each year.
Before Terry Fox died, he knew that an annual event would be held to commemorate his Marathon of Hope. Cn Canada, the annual Terry Fox Run is held every September, usually on the second Sunday following Labour Day.
As Terry said in 1980, "if you've given a dollar, you are a part of the Marathon of Hope."
