Tall Ships Early Morning Departure
Crews prepare to depart Collingwood harbour

Loaded with fresh supplies and new faces, the Pathfinder and Playfair said so long to Collingwood harbour early in the morning, on Sunday August 7th. The two tall ships set sail for Tobermory shortly after 7 a.m., quietly slipping through the still waters of Collingwood harbour in total contrast to the atmosphere of up tempo Wakestock event that would soon crank up the energy level for day three in Collingwood.

The non-profit group, the Toronto Brigantine Team was visiting Collingwood for a few days. The organization provides sail training with teenagers throughout the summer months. Sail training is a challenging and adventurous endeavor conducted aboard ships under sail. Living and working aboard a traditional square-rigged tall ship is a unique and compelling learning environment for the development of self-reliance, self esteem, teamwork, responsibility and leadership in young people. Each Trainee is placed in an unfamiliar environment with unique demands, new people and real life expectations.

Trainees come from a variety of social and educational backgrounds, but on these ships they are on a level playing field. The Toronto Brigantine Team expects each trainee to become a member of the working Crew and contribute to the safety of the ship and his or her shipmates. The experience is genuine and the rules are those demanded by the task of sailing a complex vessel.

The crew of Playfair, the first of the two tall ships that visited Collingwood, had the harbour all to themselves. It's hard to believe that only a few hours earlier, thousands of people, rock bands and world class wakeboarders rocked Collingwood Harbour during day two of Wakestock 2011. On this morning, the water was like glass and all was quiet.
