Tall Ships Visit Collingwood Harbour
welcoming Toronto Brigantine Team
|
 |
Two tall ships are spending time in Collingwood harbour. The non-profit group, the Toronto Brigantine Team, provides sail training with teenagers throughout the summer months. Sail training is a challenging and adventurous endeavor conducted aboard ships under sail. Living and working aboard a traditional square-rigged tall ship is a unique and compelling learning environment for the development of self-reliance, self esteem, teamwork, responsibility and leadership in young people. Each Trainee is placed in an unfamiliar environment with unique demands, new people and real life expectations. Trainees come from a variety of social and educational backgrounds, but on these ships they are on a level playing field. The Toronto Brigantine Team expects each trainee to become a member of the working Crew and contribute to the safety of the ship and his or her shipmates. The experience is genuine and the rules are those demanded by the task of sailing a complex vessel.
The fleet is two tall ships 72 feet long with an 8 foot draw. The ships both have a steel hull and are self sufficient in regards to docking and disembarking / embarking.
"Our Parks, Recreation and Culture team is happy to see such interest in using our Harbour" said Mandy Keast, Administrative Assistant, Parks, Recreation & Culture. The tall ships will be in the harbour at the same time as the large Wakestock event, meaning the Collingwood waterfront will be a very busy place over the August 6th weekend. |

| "Toronto Brigantine, a charitable organization, began in 1962. Our founding tenets were the development of leadership, discipline, and citizenship in a maritime environment. The men and women who founded Toronto Brigantine believed that exposure to the challenge of the sea-going lifestyle could benefit young people." --www.torontobrigantine.org |
