And More Snow

Another Major Storm System
Slams Into Collingwood

Driving along the Pretty River Parkway became quite a chore on Sunday December 7th as high winds and blowing snow reduced visibility and created slippery road surfaces.

When Does Winter Begin Again?

Officially, it is still fall, but you would never know it if you have been hanging around the southern Georgian Bay shorline over the past couple of weeks. Storm after storm has turned ski country into a winter wonderland even before the offical arrival of winter.

Very strong northwest winds brought cold Arctic air over the relatively warm water of Georgian Bay, triggering snow squalls and at times, whiteout conditions. Multiple snow squalls caused dangerous driving conditions throughout Grey and Simcoe Counties. Highway 26 east of Collingwood was closed due to accidents and zero visibility. Winds gusted to 60 km/h on Sunday afternoon and the temperatures dropped to minus double-digit readings causing bone-chilling windchill. The storm was so severe that the annual Collingwood Santa Claus Parade was cancelled. Very poor driving conditions were reported south of Collingwood along County Road 124.

One brave cyclist decided to brave the elements and take to a Collingwood street. Sunset Point (pictured below) was turned into one massive whiteout at times as strong winds off Georgian Bay and heavy snow combined to reduce visibility to near zero at times

Waves came crashing in along the Collingwood shoreline on Sunday December 7th. Seagulls can be seen doing their best to fight off the strong winds that at times gusted to over 60 km/h. A brief break in the snow uncovered these scenes at Sunset Point Park.

The long range forecast calls for the cold and snow to continue so it looks like winter has officially arrived, early, in Collingwood Ski Country.
