It the end, it wasn't close at all. Dr. Kellie Leitch cruised to victory on election night, taking close to 50% of the vote in Simcoe-Grey. The first-time MP easily defeated NDP candidate Katy Austin and Independent candidate Helena Guergis, who finished second and third in voting. Voter turnout in the riding was estimated to be close to 66%. Liberal candidate Alex Smardenka finished fourth.
The national spotlight was on the Simcoe-Grey riding, as many wondered if independent candidate Helena Guergis could make a charge and hang onto her seat for another term. However, the incumbent Guergis finished a distant third and could only sit and watch Leitch run away with the riding. At her campaign office in Angus, Guergis thanked her team, family and friends for their hard work and support throughout the campaign. “This past year has been devastating for my family and close friends." She said that her team had taken on the 'Big Blue Machine' and had put forth a good campaign.
