Game On!

Outdoor Hockey In The Sunshine
and bitterly cold temperatures
It was "game on" despite -15 temperatures on Saturday, February 28th, at the outdoor ice rink in Collingwood's Central Park. In a setting similar to "Hockey Day in Canada" outdoor events, teams competed with each other, and against the elements.

The Canadian Tire Cup Hockey Tournament featured 12 teams in two divisions. On Friday, the Jokers defeated The Old Boys 8 to 5, while the Essa Devils and Huronia Hurricanes battled it out to a 2-2 tie. The day's only shutout went to the Toyota Ice Cruisers. It was a weekend of fast paced action and an event that was truly "Canadian" all the way ... eh.

Collingwood's Arena Supervisor Dennis Seymour was pleased with the way the ice surface held up. Despite the bitterly cold temperatures, the intense sunlight could have caused some problems. Seymour and his staff did an excellent job of preparing the outdoor suface for the heavy weekend workload following Friday's early morning plus 9 temperatures. Those temperatures plunged to -10 by afternoon, handing the arena staff a big challenge to restore it to playing condition in time for the weekend events.

Getting to and from the ice surface reminded everyone of what it was like to play hockey on an outdoor pond as youngsters. The dressing rooms were certainly not fancy, but everyone was enjoying the experience of playing outdoors.

Ice conditions remained good despite the brilliant late-winter sunshine. Bitterly cold temperatures, (-20 to start the morning and -12 to -15 in the afternoon) certainly helped keep the ice in great shape.
