Moving Day

The new Collingwood Public Library will open to the public on Tuesday, April 6th. Workers have been keeping busy moving all of the contents of the Maple and Second Street library to the new location.

The Town of Collingwood has set a date for the official grand opening of the new Collingwood Public Library. At 12 noon on Thursday, May 27,2010, the new downtown facility situated on the corner of St. Marie and Simcoe Streets will be officially opened at a special ceremony.

On July 4, 2008, Mayor Chris Carrier dug his shovel into the ground to officially begin construction of the three storey, 30,000-square-foot-building that will be the new home of the Collingwood Public Library and to town offices. On this day, Mayor Carrier praised the efforts of the people behind library fundraising campaign, noting that the goal of raising $500,000 had already been exceeded by more than $200,000.

Severe winter weather last year (in 2009) caused delays in construction that ultimately pushed back the opening of the new library.

The ultra-modern facility will feature two library floors, a green roof, public meeting space, art gallery and recording studio. Collingwood Mayor Chris Carrier said that the library official openng will be an exciting day, joking that citizens of Collingwood can help by checking the maximum amount of books out of the old library just before it closes, and taking them back to the new library.
