Collingwood Minor Baseball Concerned That The Ball Diamond
Had Become Unsafe
The Old Village (Legion) Park Baseball Diamond is going to be rehabilitated. Collingwood Leisure Services staff and members of the public have been concerned about the deterioration of the diamond over the past several years. At one point, work to upgrade the site had been planned for the 2011 budget year, but concerns expressed by Collingwood Minor Baseball officials, parents and town staff that the ball diamond had become unsafe has resulted in a need to repair the field this season.
In a staff report to Collingwood Town Council, CAO Kim Wingrove noted that the ball diamond has sustained increased damage this winter as it is constructed above the old quarry/dumpsite which is subject to significant ground heaving and slumping. (Many Collingwood residents under the age of 50 may not remember the large quarry that once operated where the Collingwood Legion and Veteran's Field now sits)
Collingwood Leisure Services staff noted that many of the concrete posts for the fencing at the ball diamond had risen due to frost this past winter. In addition, they noted that the dugouts are now in very poor shape and the diamond requires grading and surface treatment to provide accurate slopes and drainage.
The ball diamond will get new dugouts, grading and surface treatment. Repairs will be made to the damaged fencing.
