It was once a major Collingwood employer and a landmark at the western entrance to the town. Now, the abandoned Kaufman Furniture plant is coming down. When the Collingwood furniture plant closed in 2006, 137 employees lost their jobs. The Collingwood Kaufman plant was a subsidiary of Krug Inc. of Kitchener and had been manufacturing fine furniture in Collingwood for over 50 years. The rise in the Canadian dollar was considered to be the major reason for the closure. Most of the products constructed at the Collingwood plant were sold clients in the United States.
The west end location of the former Kaufman plant was once an industrial area, housing two other factory outlets including the former Georgian China. Now, the area has been redeveloped and boasts major condominium and retail outlets, including the waterfront Kaufman codominium development situated directly behind the former furniture factory.
