Wellness Centre To Replace Collingwood Contact Centre

New Wellness Centre will replace the aging Collingwood Contact Centre. The Wellness Centre will be designed to meet the needs of the town's adults and seniors.
Heated Debate Brings Approval To Heritage Park Revitalization
Phase One, in 2009 Budget

Collingwood Council has approved the expenditure of 2.9 million dollars to complete phase one of the revitalization to Heritage Park. The 6.4 million dollar phase one will see much needed improvements carried out on Centennial Pool. In addidtion, phase one of the project will allow for the construction of a new Wellness Centre which will replace the outdated Collingwood Contact Centre.

The discussion was not without fireworks, particularly when Councilor Sonny Foley blasted Councilor Kathy Jeffery, stating that the proposed stand-alone Wellness Centre isn't sustainable, and should be a part of a future multi-use facility. Foley feels the construction of the Wellness Centre disregards the inttent of the Leisure Services Master Plan.

Councilor Tim McNabb also struggled with the plan to build a stand-alone Wellness Centre, saying that down the road, the decision could hurt plans to build a new multi-use facility. Deputy Mayor Sandra Cooper told council that she believes membership will increase, and fees will increase, as the result of the construction of a new facility.

Downtown Revitilization Motion, Round 2, Caused More Headed Debate

In addition, discussion of including proposed upgrades to downtown Collingwood came back to the council table, triggering another spirited exchange between Collingwood Mayor Chris Carrier and Councilor Ian Chadwick. Chadwick challenged Mayor Carrier on a procedural issue, stating that the matter should not have been allowed to come back for discussion after it had been voted down on January 19th's meeting of council. "I believe we have to look upon this in terms of the bylaw and I think that just because some people didn't get their way they can't keep bringing up an issue, they have to let it go by" Chadwick stated. Mayor Carrier slammed back by accusing Councilor Chadwick of putting words into other people's mouths. "You're putting the words in other people's mouths that the rationale for is because they didn't get their way" Carrier said. "It seemed that way to me" Chadwick said in response. Carrier then stated that he believes that he has been respectful to the process. Council voted in favour of supporting the Mayor on the issue. The motion to include phase one of the proposed downtown revitilization in the 2009 budget was once again turned down in a 5 to 4 vote.
