Turn A Negative Into A Positive
Graffiti Is An Artform
Collingwood Municipal officials have seen enough. A move is underway to clean up graffiti and tagging throughout the downtown district. However, Collingwood is taking a positive approach to dealing with a situation that impacts all communities. The town will fight the spreading problem by working with local high school students to turn graffiti into an artform.
Downtown Revitalization Coordinator Paula Lehr said graffiti as an artform is really popular with youth right now. She said because of this, the town will hold an event called "the Great Graffiti Paint Out." The special event will see graffitti removed and tagged buildings painted. Then, a series of downtown events will include a special graffiti seminar to be held at the Collingwood Public Library. Lehr said the seminar will be of special interest to local high school students.
In addition, a Youth Graffiti Auction will invite local teenagers to submit their graffiti art to be displayed in downtown Collingwood. Downtown merchants will sponsosr the event, and after the artwork has been displayed for six weeks, it will be auctioned off with proceeds going to help art programs at both Collingwood high schools and The Door.
The Great Graffiti Paint Out will be held on Friday, October 22nd from 1:00pm - 3:30pm.
