Collingwood firefighters were called to a fire at a downtown apartment building - rooming house shortly after 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 20th. Three people were rescued from the building at 75 Third Street, with one person taken to Collingwood General and Marine Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
A tenant at the front of the building said that she walked into her kitchen to find it filled with smoke. "I just ran out the front door. I've never been in a fire before. I hate fires" she said. Her husband and the family cats were also able to get out safely.
Fire crews worked quickly to bring the blaze under control. A portion of the roof collapsed. Firefighters had to cut through a steel roof to get at the stubborn blaze. They were on the scene well into the early morning hours of Friday, January 21st.
Wasaga Beach firefighters joined the Collingwood department to help battle the blaze.
The building was constructed in the late 1800's and once served as a technical school.
