Chilean Miner, Edison Pena
Was A Special Guest At The
Collingwood Elvis Festival
Chilean Miner, Edison Pena, with Collingwood Mayor Sandra Cooper
He loves the music of Elvis. Chilean Miner, Edison Pena, often sang his favourite Elvis songs while trapped deep in the damaged Chelean mine with 32 others for two months.
Trapped more than 600 metres below the surface, the 33 miners were winched to safety, one-by-one, through a narrow shaft in a small capsule designed quickly and specifically for the amazing rescue operation.
Pena's trip to the Collingwood Elvis Festival represented his first ever visit to Canada. "It's too hot here" he said when asked how he liked being in Canada for the first time. (We'll have to invite him back for a ski day in January). Pena made several personal appearances throughout the Collingwood Elvis Festival Weekend at various venues and stages, and his performances were very popular with audiences everywhere. He says his two favourite Elvis songs are "Are You Lonesome Tonight" and "Blue Suede Shoes." Throughout the festival, he was more than happy to sign autographs, pose for photos and to visit with people who wanted to have a conversation or just shake his hand and say "hello."
Once the festival was over, Pena took a day to relax by visiting some of the region's popular tourist destinations. He even took time to take a breathtaking ride down Blue Mountain on the new Ride Runner Mountain Coaster. His last day in on his first visit to Canada was spent at Niagara Falls.
