How Cold Was It?
Mother Nature Provided The Special Effects Along Collingwood's
Waterfront During Cold Snap With Temperatures Hanging
Around -20
The intense sytem moved into southern Ontario from the American Midwest dumping heavy snow throughout the region and sending temperatures on a nose dive. Temperatures dipped to near -20 in Collingwood, with windchill values approaching -25 on Saturday. Temperatures warmed up slightly to welcome the official arrival of Winter on Sunday, December 21st, but high winds caused blowing snow and dangerous driving conditions throughout the southern Georgian Bay region. The bone-chilling temperatures provided area resorts and private clubs with the perfect opportunity to make a great deal of snow (pictured below) to add to the already generous base supplied by ongoing natural snowfalls in November and December.
Snowmaking operations were in top gear at Osler Ski Club (as seen from a frozen Collingwood harbour) at the height of the latest cold snap. Extreme cold temperatures allow area clubs and resorts to make a great deal of quality snow in a short period of time. Ski conditions heading into the Christmas Holiday Season were excellent thanks to natural snowfalls and snowmaking and grooming operations.
