Heatwave Comes To A
Violent End

A large tree came crashing down on Sixth Street at the height of Wednesday's storm, narrowly missing a house and gas station.

Storm Damage As Heatwave Ends

Record temperatures were recorded as the thermometre climbed to the high 30's to welcome the arrival of August in Collingwood. Factoring in the humidity took values well into the 40's for consecutive days, making this one of the most dangerous heat waves on recent record. It all came to a thundering conclusing on Wednesday evening, August 2nd when a cold front moved through bringing with it high winds, intense lighting and thunder. Collingwood residents were without power at the height of the storm as PUC work crews scrambled to locate the problem areas. Trees came crashing down throughout town, including a large tree that somehow missed hitting a house and gas station at Sixth and Oak Streets. Throughout the province, close to 150,000 people were without power as the result of the Wednesday evening storms. Midland police had to rescue 10 sailboaters who were caught in the sudden storm on Georgian Bay.
