For over 30 years The Terry Fox Foundation has worked to achieve Terry’s vision. That vision is a world without cancer.
Every year Terry Fox Runs are held In more than 9,000 communities across Canada to raise money for cancer research.
The Terry Fox Foundation annually highlights a young cancer survivor from the Terry Fox community of supporters.
Young Collingwood resident Lauren Lesage is the 2018 Terry Fox Ambassador.
She is a dancer superstar, a cancer survivor and quite simply, a pretty amazing human being.
Lauren told the foundation that she doesn’t remember a lot about her cancer treatments or being in the hospital for that matter, but her mother does.
“She tells me that I was only 6 months old when she and my dad were told that I had cancer. They wanted to run from the hospital because they were so scared but the doctors and nurses soon became like their family. I had cancer in my eyes that went away after the doctors gave me chemotherapy.”
Lauren says when she was almost three the doctors wanted to remove one of her eyes.
“Lucky for me my mom and dad wouldn’t let them.”
She kept going back to the hospital for treatments which must have been exhausting for Lauren and her family, but then, when she was five-and-one-half years of age, she was told that she was cancer-free.
Imagine the relief Lauren, her parents and family felt upon hearing the good news, the unbelievable news.
Two words they had waited for so long to hear.
Lauren is now living life like any other child her age. She says she has to be careful when outside in the sun but otherwise carries on with her favourite activities like dancing and singing. She can also really hit a golf ball!
Lauren is in French Immersion and looks forward to participating with her family in the annual Terry Fox Run in Wasaga Beach each year.
Her proud parents are Krista and Chris LeSage.
Her grandfather, former Collingwood Mayor Terry Geddes, along with John Kirby, co-chaired the very first Collingwood Terry Fox Run.
Lauren obviously wasn’t around when Terry Fox embarked on his journey but she says she admires the courage Terry Fox displayed to Canadians as he ran across the country to raise money and awareness for cancer research.
“Cancer can bring you down but to anybody fighting it I say be brave like Terry – and me too!”
Lauren is an inspiration to everyone.
The next time you are having a bad day, think of Lauren. Her story and positive outlook on life will make whatever is bothering you seem meaningless.
Her story will put a smile on your face.
