proposed look of the new Cascades Casino in Chatham
Gateway Unveils Plans to Invest $36 Million, Create up to 200 New Jobs
Cascades Chatham Casino to Feature New, Exciting Dining and Entertainment Options
Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited has begun to make its move into Ontario and we’re getting our first glimpse at what a casino could look like in either Collingwood or Wasaga Beach.
Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited (“Gateway”) has announced it expects to invest $36 million into a new Cascades Casino at 615 Richmond Street in Chatham and create up to 200 new jobs in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, subject to necessary approvals and completion of the land acquisition.
As the selected service provider for the Central Gaming Bundle in Ontario, Gateway will bring two more properties and one new planned build in Wasaga Beach or Collingwood to the Gateway portfolio when fully implemented.
Collingwood Mayor Sandra Cooper was in conversation with OLG Thursday morning March 15th right after the announcement that Gateway would be in charge of bringing a new casino to south Georgian Bay.
“It is welcome news to know who will be the provider. The Town of Collingwood has a data base of information useful to an operator including the current Official Plan and the motion approved by Council. I would expect Council may wish for an update from Town staff and a follow up from my phone call.”
Deputy Mayor Brian Saunderson says he feels a gaming facility is an issue with far reaching social, economic and lifestyle impacts.
“The Town’s current position on a casino facility was adopted by the previous Council in a motion dated March 4, 2013, in which the Council of the day voted to advise the OLG that Collingwood was not interested in a standalone 300 slot machine gaming facility in the C7 Region but may be interested in an Integrated Destination Resort. Council further agreed to pursue negotiations with the OLG and any private sector operators about such opportunities and to engage the public in open discussions prior to any final decision.”
Saunderson said now that OLG has announced the successful service provider, Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited, the Town will have to wait to see what opportunities the service provider identifies in the south Georgian Bay region and whether such a facility is of the type Collingwood is prepared to consider.
“Under the current zoning restrictions, there is no area in Collingwood that is zoned to accommodate a casino, so there is a great deal of ground to cover and discussions to be had before any decisions can be made on this issue.”
The proposed new Chatham casino would feature over 300 slots and 10 table games, and feature Gateway’s signature restaurant brands MATCH Eatery & Public House and The Buffet. It is expected construction will begin construction this spring with a planned opening date of mid-2019.
Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited (“Gateway”) is one of the largest and most diversified gaming companies in Canada. Operating in British Columbia, Edmonton and Ontario, Gateway has over 6,200 employees and operates 25 gaming properties with 288 tables, over 9,600 slots, 68 restaurants and bars and 272 hotel rooms.
