At Christmas 2005 the "You give them something to eat" campaign was organized for people living in poverty. One hundred and twenty families were reached. The original intention of giving a nice Christmas meal ended up feeding these families for one month. The question soon arose: "What happens when the food runs out?" Caring Hands was formed to address this challenge and the causes that lead to it. Caring Hands is a registered non-governmental charitable organization that empowers families to overcome the challenges of poverty.

Caring Hands now has a connection with the Collingwood Downtown Farmers' Market. Every Saturday morning, Judy Howe is on hand selling jewelry that has been made out of recycled paper. More than 50 women in Uganda have been trained in making beads from recycled paper and turning it into beautiful jewelry. The money raised from sales goes back to help people deal with the struggles with poverty.
